Rosalind Ann Gumby Bauchum (Roz) was born January 1, 1952 to Harry Lester Gumby and Doris Jean Carroll Gumby in Fort Dix, New Jersey. Roz was the third child born in this family. Because she was the daughter of a Chief Master Sargent in the United States Air Force, Roz would live in many places. She attended elementary schools in San Antonio, Texas, Honolulu, Hawaii, and middle school in Belton, Missouri. Roz graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1970.

Roz earned a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Kansas. She pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Delta Chapter, in 1971. Soon after earning her college degrees, Roz met James William Alexander Bauchum III, and the two married on August 20, 1977 at Second Baptist Church, Kansas City, Missouri. It was officiated by the late Reverend E.E. Chappelle. To their union were born two daughters, Jessica Ann and Stephanie Lorene.

Churches included Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church, and New Hope Baptist Church, all of Kansas City, Missouri. Later, she was an active member of Second Missionary Baptist Church of Grandview, Missouri, where she directed the youth choir and taught Sunday school. Roz later joined Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ in Kansas City, Missouri where was a deaconess, taught Vacation Bible School, and was a Sunday School supervisor. She assisted in curriculum writing for Sunday school lessons.

Roz was also an author, researcher, educator, grant writer/reviewer, and genealogist. She had expertise in social system's research, health and human service need analyses, with research methods involving archival, secondary data analyses, quantitative and qualitative research which provided evidenced-based skills for genealogy. Roz taught genealogy and family history research courses at Western Baptist Bible College, Kansas City, Missouri.

Roz’s book, “The Story of Gumby; Tracing the Family history to the 1700s”, captured her interest in ancestral history. In addition, other history-related titles include; “African-American Organizations; 1794 – 1999”, “The Black Architect”, “Elias and Lucinda Parker; The Case for a Civil War Widow’s Pension”, and “The Black Business and Professional Woman”.
