Rhoda Johnson Obituary

Mother Rhoda Frances Wright Johnson was born March 12, 1927 in Moberly, Missouri to the union of Edward Enoch Wright Sr. and Jewell Goldie Holiday-Wright. She was the fourth of seven children. She attended Lincoln High School in Moberly, Missouri. She graduated at the age of 16 with honors. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri and lived with her aunt, Minta Rainey. She studied art via mailed correspondence. Her goal was to be a professional artist.

On March 6, 1948, Rhoda married Moinstra D. Johnson in Kansas City, Missouri. They were married nearly fifty years. To this union were born eight sons and three daughters. Mrs. Johnson was a faithful homemaker. She was a devoted wife; served her husband and children well. She was a kind and loving mother. She encouraged and celebrated everyone’s academic achievement.

Mrs. Johnson was an amazing cook and baker. Her hobbies included embroidery, needlepoint, crocheting clothes for dolls and displaying them. She was an avid reader. Aside from the Bible, she loved poetry, history, autobiographies, literature, and fiction.

Mrs. Johnson was mission-minded. She had a heart for the downtrodden, sick and shut in. She sewed shirts by hand for Mutual of Help and raised money for the Heart Fund every year. She was a beloved babysitter for several single mothers in the community. As a supplement to her family’s income, she also sold Avon in the neighborhood.

Mrs. Johnson accepted the Lord at eight years old in the Sunshine Band at Franklin Street Church of God in Christ in Moberly, Missouri, under the leadership of Elder J.L. Johnson. In 1946, Mrs. Johnson became a faithful member of Wright Temple Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of her uncle Elder J.W. Wright. In this ministry she became active as a Sunday School teacher, Bible Band Teacher/President, choir member, Vacation Bible School teacher, Sunshine Band teacher, and a Deacon’s wife. After the demise of her husband, she joined Holy Deliverance Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of her nephew Elder Dennis Lenley to be with her family.

Wright Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Ronald Wayne Johnson, two sisters, Marguerite Gray, and Bessie Watts, three brothers, James Wright, John Wright, Edward Wright, Jr. as well as one sibling that died at birth.
