Michael Lewis Obituary

Michael "Mickey" Steven Lewis departed this life on May 27, 2022 at home in Overland Park, KS at the age of 79. He was born May 18, 1943 in Kansas City, MO to Christine Leola Lewis Wilson and Joseph Lewis Sr. Mickey was a maintenance worker in many of the downtown office buildings in the Kansas City area. His pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even though Mickey grew up in a time of segregation he instilled his love of fishing and crawfishing in his children and grandchildren; fishing many of the lakes and rivers in the Kansas City area even when there was no one of color around. He always taught his children that the water and nature in the area belonged to them as much as anyone else. His Mother taught him a great deal about crawfishing and it was his passion to pass that along. Mickey was responsible for the early education of all of his children and most of his grandchildren.

He worked with them on math, vocabulary, reading and taught them that their self- worth extended beyond the geographic area they were born into. He was a proud man who worked hard for a living. Although he didn't have much formal education he made it a point to learn his children's school work so that he could teach them and help them have a better life than he did. Mickey loved woodworking, carpentry, was a self-taught mechanic and built original doll houses for his loved ones. In a different era, he would have been an engineer. He could fix anything, manage calculations in his head, make precise measurements and see easily how things went together without the help of a manual. Mickey loved Jazz, blues and belting out old school R&B first thing in the morning while getting his children ready for school. He had a great voice, a voice we still hear through our memories.

We are all saddened by the loss of this giant who loved hard and gave all for his family. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents Christine and Joseph Lewis Sr; siblings Roberta "Lumpy" Belton, Christopher Lewis, Philip Lewis, Joella "Josie" Blount, Paul Lewis, Obon "Junebug" Lewis, Richard Lewis and Gregory Lewis; children Robert Lewis, Steven Lewis and David C. Warren; and grandchildren, Karana McReynolds, Steven Warren Jr, Corey Hatton, David L. Brown and great-grandchild Brooklyn M. Musyoki. He is survived by his brothers Ricky "Butch" Lewis, Jeff Lewis, Jerry Lewis and Anthony Lewis; his children, Zena Warren-Osoba(Lateef), Robin D. Warren, Joseph Warren, Steven Warren Sr, stepson Roderick Warren; grandchildren Keanna D. Hutton, Nicole Warren-Musyoki (Eric) Jazmyn T. Warren (Courey), Kierre Shepherd, Steven C Warren Jr, Joseph C Warren Jr, Tyler Warren and Taylor Warren; great grandchildren Brennen N. Musyoki and Jordyn Warren; and a host of other relatives and friends.  The family would like to say a special thank you to Deborah Love-Boatright, Chazeraa Bartee and Heather Williams.
