Hazel Revels, affectionately known as Mama Hazel, passed away on April 16, 2024, in Kansas City, MO, at the age of 83. She was born on July 23, 1940, in St. Louis, MO, to Lewis and Eva Spinks, and was the cherished matriarch of the Murphy family.
Growing up as the tenth of eleven children, Hazel is the last of the first generation of Spinks, closing the first chapter of the Spinks legacy. In 1958, she graduated from Vashon High School in St. Louis, MO. Following her education, she met and married George Murphy, with whom she moved to Kansas City, MO. From their union, two daughters were born: Antoinette (Reneé) and Sharon. Later in life, Hazel found love again and married John Revels, and together they welcomed their daughter Sonya
Hazel dedicated many years serving the Kansas City School District as a cook, touching countless students and colleagues. Hazel's life was marked by her love for family, travel, and joy in the simple things. She was a proud member of the L&M Starlettes, where she showcased her talent for bowling, earning numerous trophies and accolades along the way.
Hazel's love for the blues was infectious, she found solace and camaraderie in sharing this with her family and friends. In addition, Hazel was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, embodying the principles of sisterhood, service, and spirituality throughout her life.
Hazel's legacy of love and resilience lives on through her three daughters: Antoinette (Reneé) Tolbert, Sharon Murphy, and Sonya Murphy. She was also a cherished grandmother to Anthony (Tenishia) Murphy, Aaron Tolbert, Shanelle Cowan, Amber Murphy (preceded in death), Ashley Huskey, and Zahara Tolbert, great-grandmother to Makayla Tolbert, Alyvia Murphy, Rihanna Cheadle, Eddie Cheadle, and Anthony Murphy II.
Beyond her immediate family, Hazel touched the lives of many as a mother figure, offering love, guidance, and support to Anthony Johnson, Teresa Miller, Tonia Boykin, Tammy Roland, and numerous others. She shared a special bond with her devoted friend, Mr. Johnson, who stood by her side through thick and thin.
Hazel's memory will be cherished by her nieces, nephews, lifelong friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Known for her unapologetic honesty and "tell it like it is" attitude, Hazel was truly one of a kind. Her presence brought laughter, wisdom, and warmth to all who crossed her path.
As we bid farewell to Mama Hazel, let us celebrate the remarkable life she lived and the profound impact she had on those fortunate to know her. Though she’s no longer with us in body, her legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will continue to inspire and uplift us for generations to come.
