Emmitt Mitchem was born on February 7, 1940, in Hattieville, Arkansas to the union of Tiney and Mattie H. (Byers) Mitchem. He went home to glory on Friday, May 29, 2020. Emmitt was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, both parents, paternal grandparents; John and Lillie (Canady) Mitchem, maternal grandparents; King Kroger “Babe” and Ines Byers, two sisters; Delphine Mitchem and Dorsie Lee Toombs, one brother: Alphus J. Mitchem, one brother-in-law; Jimmie D. Wolf, Sr. and sister-in-law’s; Annie M. Hammons, Cheryl Mitchem and Della Hammons.
Emmitt accepted Christ at an early age and attended Moores Chapel Methodist Church in Cleveland, Arkansas. He graduated from Conway County Training in Menifee, Arkansas; Class of 1959. He received an Associate’s degree from Penn Valley Community College and a BS degree in Accounting from Rockhurst University. In addition, he obtained his Real Estate License for both Missouri and Kansas.
In July 1959, he united in Holy Matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Loisteen Hammons. To this union three children were born, Valerie, Renwick and Nicole. Emmitt was a devoted and adoring husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, sports, traveling, playing games, especially horseshoes and Jenga; Emmitt loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them and friends as well. He is affectionately known as “Grandpa” and “Papa Mitchem” who supported his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their endeavors from sporting events, school activities, dance recitals, weddings, and business ventures.
Emmitt moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1959 and united with the Mariah Walker A.M.E. Church in 1960 where he was a faithful member. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee and a member of the Christian Education Department. In 1986, Emmitt united with the Second Missionary Baptist Church of Grandview. He served as an ordained Deacon and later as an Elder and member of finance committee. He was involved in numerous projects within the church and was a faithful member until his demise.
After moving to Kansas City, Emmitt worked various jobs before starting his career with Missouri Gas Energy. He was a dedicated and loyal employee and retired after 32 years of service. Shortly thereafter, he worked for the Jackson County Public Administration office. He retired from there after 5 years and worked part-time for GSC lighting company.
Emmitt leaves to cherish his memory three children; Valerie Jones (Michael) of Kansas City, MO., Renwick Mitchem of Grandview, MO., Nicole Mitchem of Grandview, MO., two Sisters, Dortha Mae Davis (Charles) of Grandview, MO., and Charlene Wolf, Leawood, KS., two brothers, Harold Mitchem (Pamela) of Overland Park, KS., and Bobby Mitchem, Olathe, KS., one brother in-law, Curtis Hammons, Sr. (Belinda) of Lee’s Summit, MO; Two grandchildren, Anthony Jordan, Jr (Juanita) and Christina Jordan, four great-grandchildren, Essance and Isaiah Jordan, Christopher Doss and Nasir Singh. Two Godchildren, Taylor Lee of Grandview, MO and Demetria Luster of Kansas City, MO and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
