Charles Anthony DePriest was born March 19, 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas where he grew up. He was a self-employed carpenter and operated his business under House Dr.
Charles received an associate degree and several other certifications on his educational path. He enjoyed cake decorating and was a great cook often inventing his own recipes. The two famous dishes that stood out were “HOBO Delight” and “Blue Banana Cake”. Charles was very resourceful when it came to making things happen. Being the oldest of his family, his siblings admired his resilience, strength and tenacity. In his younger days he was nicknamed “Duke”.
Charles accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Rescue Baptist Church. His faith was unwavering; and he believed God’s word.
Charles loved to dance. He had a dip that would not quit! As the saying goes, “Dance Like No One is Watching” Charles took this to a new level. On many occasions he danced when everyone was watching. He owned the dance floor. In his living room, a family gathering, or even while in a Limousine he would seize the moment. Charles enjoyed displaying his moves and groves while everyone was watching and cheering him on.
Traveling with his beloved companion Shirley was his favorite pastime. The simple things in life brought him great joy. Sitting on the porch in the country embracing the cool breeze and fresh county air made him happy. The times he spent traveling to Arkansas and Denver were memories he often shared how happy it made him feel to be with his extended family.
He also loved Gospel music. He would sit for hours listening to Gospel Music. “ I Won’t’ Complain” by Rance Allen was his favorite song. This song is a true testament to the life he lived. Charles was loving and always gave what he could. He lost his battle to cancer on September 28, 2020 at his home and was comforted by his love, Shirley Reese of 15 years.
He was preceded in death by his Stepfather Leslie Louis McFarlane, His only Child Nysa Jeannette Tanner, brother Howard Spears and Great-Granddaughter Baby Jada Howard.
He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life: His companion, Shirley Reese, Mother Carolyn Mitchell, Sister Marla Dickinson (Clifford), brother Kevin McFarlane (Shurondia), brother Keith McFarlane, brother George DePreist (Kim). Six Grandchildren, Reggie Thompson, Niesha Minor (Ricky), Carolyn Howard, Jamal Tanner, Corey Tanner and DeAnthony Tanner; 15 great grandchildren, aunties, uncles, cousins and a host of relatives and friends.
