Bertha Hooten

Bertha L. Gines – Hooten, 70, departed this life on October 22, 2023, at her home in Kansas City, Missouri.  She was born on April 8, 1953, in Kansas City, Missouri to Eugene F. Thatcher, Sr., and Sylvia A. Gines-Jones. 

She graduated from the Kansas City Public Schools.  She began working for the City of Kansas City (Parks & Rec), as a Street Sweeper for over 20+ years, and retired in 2010.  She was involved in the Marching Falcons, and the CPWOC Youth.

She married Marshall Hooten on December 28, 1968.

Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene F. Thatcher, Sr., and Sylvia A. Gines-Jones; her husband, Marshall Hooten; her brothers, Melvin Jones, Edward Jones, Henry (Tiny) Jones, Carl Evans, and Eugene F. Thatcher, II; her sisters, Edwina (Love) Jones-Lewis, Ora (Tuttie) Jones, and Anita Ledbetter.

She leaves to cherish her lasting memories her bonus children, Marsha Hooten, and Thomas Bell; god-children, Ciera Donald-Brown, and La’Mont Johnson-Shivers; eleven sisters, Lucresia (Aaron) Shivers, Elamada (Graylin) Canady, Elaine Bynum, Denise (Rickie) Essex, Rosalind (Gaylord) Mustin, Lisa (Alex) Thatcher-Gordon, Kim Thatcher, Margene (Brandon) Thatcher-Price, Phyllis Talton, Jackie (Daniel) Youngblood, and Michelle Alexander; four brothers, Ah’Lee Robinson, Eugene (Deborah) Thatcher, Jr., Marc (Sonya) Kindred, Corey Thatcher, and a host of other relatives and friends.
